Il appartient au club très restreint des athlètes médaillés olympiques dans différents sports. Il remporta deux fois l'or par équipes en gymnastique (barres parallèles et barres horizontales ; 3e à la corde) et fut vice-champion olympique du 100 m en athlétisme en 1896.
