Il domina pendant 10 ans la scène internationale. Champion olympique en 1952 (67,5 kg) et 1956 (82,5 kg) et médaillé d'argent en 1960 (75 kg). Il a obtenu 5 titres mondiaux consécutifs de 1954 à 1959 (en légers, moyen ou mi-lourd) pour un total de huit médailles mondiales.Trois fois vainqueur aux Jeux Pan-Américains, 1955, 1959 et 1963. Auteur de 21 records du monde.
