Champion olympique du marathon en 1904 chez lui à Saint-Louis. Il est l\'un des trois athlètes américains, vainqueur du marathon olympique (avec Johnny Hayes en 1908 et Frank Shorter en 1972). Il termina 2eme au marathon de Boston en 1904.
